Track 4 – Goin’ home (Toto)

We pack our bags and leave the room
The time has come, we know
We walk towards the parking lot
Honey, please, let us take it slow

Our car out there, it waits for you
Off to Groningen you will go
I, instead, will take a train
And wake up in Geneva tomorrow

It will be tough but cool as well
As a couple we will surely grow
Still, it is sad that we will live apart
And that I am not looking at you right now, but at your photo

Freiburg (Breisgau) Hauptbahnhof, a far from beautiful train station in Southern Germany, is an important railway junction connecting passengers to and from other parts of Germany, France, and Switzerland. Almost three years ago, I was waiting here together with my father, a family friend, and this friend’s brother on platform 7 for the train to Titisee-Neustadt. We had just spent the rest day of our Black Forest cycling vacation in the old city center of Freiburg, and it was time for us to go back to our vacation home. We had to prepare ourselves for a mountain bike ride to the famous Feldberg which was planned for the day after, and we wanted to get to bed early that day.

Today, I am back at Freiburg (Breisgau) Hauptbahnhof, and I am waiting on platform 3 for the 1101h train which will bring me to Switzerland. I am not embarking on a mid-vacation journey this time, but instead I am heading southwards to my new home in Geneva, the place where my next career adventure will begin tomorrow. Just like three years ago, I want to go to bed early today, but not before I am sure that my partner has arrived home safely. She dropped me off at the train station this morning, and she is now driving in the opposite direction towards our beautiful apartment in Groningen, the Netherlands. I must admit that I envy her for waking up in the beautiful city of Groningen tomorrow, but I am sure that, in turn, she envies me for waking up in a studio which has an amazing view on the Mont Blanc (and many other Giants of the Alpes). We should thus visit each other often to enjoy each other’s company and to enjoy the beautiful regions we live in.
