During the first five years following my PhD defense, I wrote various blog posts addressing matters related to my academic journey between 2019 and 2024. Through these posts, I hoped to keep my relatives informed about my professional activities (and perhaps convince that one particular sibling to stop asking when I would finally start looking for a ‘real’ job). Additionally, I hoped my experiences might inspire at least one young academic to take an unexpected, illogical, and/or uncomfortable next step, rather than just following the logical progression.
In the end, I wrote as many blog posts as humans have chromosomes, and an overview of them is presented below. Naturally, I welcome you to read them all, but I suppose it would make more sense to focus on selected ones, such as the one summarizing how my academic vision developed between 2019 and 2024, the one about everything I put my partner through by moving to Switzerland, the one advocating for more frequent celebrations in science, the one sharing the timelines of a (successful) personal grant application, or the one discussing all the steps I did not take. And if you feel like reading a few more, feel free to explore selected posts on similar themes, such as:
• How I became a postdoctoral researcher in the Hopfgartner group in Geneva (No. 1, 2, and 3)
• How my mother’s illness challenged and inspired me (No. 6, 7, and 37)
• How I could return to Groningen as an assistant professor (No. 25, 30, and 36)
